TL;DR
Junior Engine Control System & Monitoring Engineer (LOX/LCH4): Developing and testing control, monitoring, fault-detection, and sensor-validation algorithms for the Storm high-thrust cryogenic rocket engine with an accent on MATLAB/Simulink, Python, functional models, and MiL/SiL/HiL verification. Focus on integrating propulsion models, assessing stability and robustness, supporting cryogenic engine test campaigns, and implementing safety-critical monitoring functions.

Location: Munich, Bavaria, Germany

Company

Developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable orbital space vehicle, together with the Storm high-thrust LOX/LCH4 cryogenic rocket engine and its propulsion systems.

What you will do

  • Design and implement engine control, monitoring, fault-detection, and sensor-validation algorithms for Storm.
  • Contribute to thrust and mixture-ratio control, chill-down, start-up, shutdown transients, and subsystem control requirements.
  • Set up the controller development environment, including toolchains, model and code configuration management, auto-coding, and MiL/SiL/HiL infrastructure.
  • Integrate turbopump, valve, combustion-device, and cryogenic-feed-line functional models into simulation and control-design environments.
  • Run closed-loop simulations and test campaigns to assess performance, stability margins, robustness, and controller verification from Simulink models to target hardware.
  • Support LOX/LCH4 engine and component tests through preparation, on-site support, data processing, post-test analysis, model correlation, and technical documentation.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Aerospace, Electrical, Control, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Recent graduate or graduating within the next months; no professional experience is required.
  • Solid fundamentals in classical and modern control theory, including state-space methods, robustness, and digital control.
  • Practical experience with MATLAB/Simulink and Python through coursework or projects, plus basic knowledge of C/C++.
  • Basic understanding of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics, with a strong interest in cryogenic propulsion and turbomachinery.
  • Fluent English.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including drawing useful conclusions from partial or contradictory data.
  • Clear oral and written communication and the ability to work closely with engine, avionics, software, and test teams.
  • Organisation, prioritisation, reliable delivery within time constraints, eagerness to learn, and willingness to take on increasing ownership under senior guidance.
  • Positive, flexible attitude and enthusiasm for space exploration; behaviour consistent with the company’s values of Mission, Vision, Integrity, Excellence, and Teamwork.

Nice to have

  • Master’s thesis, internship, or academic project in control, propulsion, or embedded systems.
  • Exposure to MiL/SiL/HiL testing or real-time embedded systems.
  • Experience with auto-coding from Simulink models.
  • Familiarity with safety-critical design, reliability engineering, or failure mode analysis.
  • Interest or experience in data science for health monitoring and anomaly detection.
  • Knowledge of space standards such as ECSS, MIL-STD, or NASA-HBK.
  • German and/or French.

Culture & Benefits

  • Agile environment with fast decision-making while maintaining clear goals and systems.
  • Open and collaborative culture focused on transparent discussion of risks and obstacles.
  • Opportunity to contribute to the development of reusable spacecraft and cryogenic propulsion systems.
  • Relocation assistance is provided for candidates willing to relocate, including visa sponsorship where applicable.
  • Equal-opportunity workplace with a commitment to diversity and non-discrimination.
  • Employment offers are contingent on a background check appropriate to the country, role, and project.

Hiring process

  • Submit a CV for consideration.
  • Any offer is subject to successful completion of a background check.
