Bioinformatics Scientist (HIV-SOMAL)

Salary: $105,000–$130,000 USD annual base compensation

What you will do

• Address bioinformatics, scientific computing, statistical design, data mining, workflow development, and experimental design needs for NIAID investigators and collaborators.
• Analyze genomic and clinical research data, including viral sequence, host–pathogen, immunologic, somatic and germline variant, gene expression, genome, transcriptome, proteomic, ChIP-seq, and ATAC-seq datasets.
• Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot high-throughput production pipelines and provide programming support for research data dissemination.
• Collaborate with scientific staff on programming, experimental design, and computational data analysis.
• Contribute to scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
• Help develop a scalable resource for next-generation sequencing bioinformatics, structural and computational biology, and machine learning data support.

Requirements

• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field required; a master’s degree or doctorate is preferred.
• At least four years of bioinformatics experience, including at least two years developing and maintaining production bioinformatics pipelines.
• Expert-level proficiency in two of Python, R, C/C++, and sh/bash.
• Experience building container images with Docker, Podman, or Singularity/Apptainer.
• Expert-level proficiency with Snakemake, Nextflow, or CWL/WDL.
• Demonstrated expertise building technical and user documentation for tools, pipelines, and applications.
• Experience building pipelines on-premises using high-performance computing infrastructure.
• Strong skills in next-generation sequencing analysis, including whole-exome, whole-genome, RNA-seq, and ChIP-seq using long- and short-read technologies; statistical modeling; scripting; and biological interpretation.

Nice to have

• Experience supporting HIV research, including HIV sequence analysis such as viral genome assembly, phylogenetic and quasi-species analysis, drug-resistance profiling, or latent-reservoir characterization.
• Familiarity with HIV and infectious-disease data resources and host–pathogen study designs, including integration of viral sequence data with host genomic, transcriptomic, or immunologic datasets.
• Experience building pipelines or applications in AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Experience building applications with Django, Flask, RShiny, Electron, Flutter, or React.
• Experience working in a laboratory setting.
