Senior Manager, AI Engineering (AI)

Location: Hybrid, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Work from anywhere is available for up to 8 weeks per year.

Base compensation: CAD 140,600–190,600 per year, with potential eligibility for an annual bonus.

What you will do

• Build, hire, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of backend, platform, and AI engineers.
• Set the technical strategy and roadmap for KeyCite in partnership with Product, Editorial, Research, Engineering, and AI teams.
• Lead the development and productionization of generative AI and machine learning capabilities for understanding legal information and relationships.
• Modernize KeyCite’s processing, publishing, and services to improve scalability, reliability, and delivery speed.
• Establish standards for architecture, observability, experimentation, testing, reliability, and AI evaluation.
• Lead ideas from prototype through productionization, measurement, continuous improvement, and cross-functional delivery.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience, including at least 7 years of software engineering experience, at least 2 years of people management, management of teams of 10 or more, and leadership of multi-team initiatives.
• Hands-on proficiency in Python and Java, with experience building scalable backend or distributed systems.
• Strong cloud experience; AWS is preferred, while strong Azure or GCP experience is also considered.
• Experience taking machine learning or generative AI systems from prototype into production.
• Experience leading teams through modernization of existing systems while maintaining reliability.
• Ability to work with ambiguity and drive change in a fast-moving environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with LLM evaluation, retrieval, grounding, or agent-based architectures.
• Experience in legal technology, legal research, or regulated or high-accuracy professional-data domains.
• Experience at a company actively navigating an AI transformation.
• Experience with large-scale data processing, including search, knowledge graph, or data platform systems.
• Experience leading or working alongside engineering managers in a matrixed organization.
