Lead/Studio Design Engineer - Interior Components (Automotive)

Location: Hybrid in Warren, Michigan, United States; expected to report to the location at least 3 times a week. The role is not eligible for relocation benefits, and GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship.

What you will do

• Integrate and balance interior components with Design, Architecture, SMT, Performance, Human Factors, and Manufacturing.
• Create and finalize engineering criteria for customer-facing interior components and lead integrated solutions for packaging issues while protecting design intent.
• Use physical and mathematical models, DFSS methodologies, and competitive vehicle benchmarking to evaluate alternatives and manage cost, mass, timing, assembly, dimensional variation, and performance tradeoffs.
• Ensure packaging and studio models meet customer-facing targets for spaciousness, visibility, occupant accommodation, storage, cargo, access, and space utilization.
• Lead cross-functional surface and integration meetings, Expert Team discussions, CITs, Surface Workgroups, Math Virtual Assessments, and Synch Point reviews; drive issue resolution and escalation.
• Support design-surface development using digital models, full-size clay models, clinic properties, VR/MR mockups, and NX models; prepare agendas and meeting minutes.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering or another relevant degree.
• Lead level: 5+ years of experience in a related area. The position may also be filled at Studio Design Engineer level with 2+ years of experience in a related area.
• Understanding of engineering theory and automotive design principles.
• Strong or excellent oral and written communication skills, depending on level.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively across functions.
• Ability to integrate complex systems with a strong passion for design.
• Strong or advanced analytical skills for solving unusual, complex, or difficult problems.
• Strong interpersonal skills and effective cross-functional teamwork.
• Familiarity with automotive manufacturing processes.
• Experience or proficiency with CAD, specifically Unigraphics/NX, and ability to maintain and strengthen NX modeling skills.
• Basic or working knowledge of engineering specifications.
• An equivalent established substitute may be considered, including a technical associate background plus a Michigan Tech University DE Certificate during the DE transition period.

Nice to have

• Experience in interior component design and engineering.
• Coursework in statistics, mechanics of materials, vehicle/occupant packaging, or integrated design.
