Director of Engineering (Payments and Foundations)

Location: Ireland, Northern Ireland, UK, or Leatherhead, UK. For the Ireland-based position, hybrid and remote working are available.

What you will do

• Lead Payments and Foundations through Heads of Engineering, Engineering Managers, and senior technical leaders.
• Set the direction for payments engineering, including integrations, processing infrastructure, money movement, billing, reconciliation, settlement visibility, and financial controls.
• Shape infrastructure strategy covering AWS hosting, capacity, performance, cost, observability, incident response, recovery planning, and technical debt.
• Drive internal scaling and service improvements across onboarding, billing, customer service, business systems, and regional operations.
• Lead internal AI enablement, including buy-or-build decisions, adoption, training, safeguards, and measurement of productivity and service improvements.
• Partner with the CTO, Product, Finance, Operations, IT, Security, and senior engineering leaders on strategy, investment, delivery, risk, hiring, succession, and vendor management.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in software engineering, including 5+ years in leadership managing managers.
• Experience leading infrastructure or platform teams at scale, with strong knowledge of cloud systems, preferably AWS.
• Experience with business systems, integrations, and cross-functional delivery.
• Practical experience introducing AI tools or automation into business workflows.
• Sound judgement regarding security, investment, and technology partnerships.
• Ability to develop senior leaders and create an environment of high trust.
• Strong influencing skills and the ability to turn business priorities into deliverable plans.
• Commercial judgement, decisiveness under pressure, and the ability to balance technical decisions with customer and revenue impact.

• Experience leading payments engineering, including processing, provider integrations, reconciliation, settlement, and controls.
