Forward Deployed Engineer (AI)

Location: Sydney, New South Wales, or Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; requires 30–50% travel.

What you will do

• Embed within strategic customer engineering teams to understand business processes, technical architectures, operational constraints, and customer value.
• Design and build production-grade AI applications, including retrieval pipelines, workflow automation, API orchestration layers, and data integrations.
• Integrate foundation models, customer data sources, and existing applications while optimizing latency, reliability, and cost.
• Own software delivery across scoping, design, coding, testing, deployment, operations, maintenance, monitoring, evaluations, guardrails, and CI/CD.
• Troubleshoot production incidents across AI models, distributed systems, and application services, identifying and resolving root causes.
• Mentor and train team members, contribute to code reviews, codify reusable deployment patterns, and identify opportunities to expand customer AI adoption.

Requirements

• 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
• 2+ years of experience in an Agile, startup, or rapidly scaling environment.
• Experience communicating technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Experience with agentic and spec-driven development; developing AI agents is a plus.
• Experience with AI tools, including evaluation frameworks, agent tooling, RAG pipelines, and prompt engineering.

Nice to have

• 3+ years of full software development lifecycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
• Experience working in customer production environments and building or deploying AI/ML applications in production.
• Background as a founder, engineering lead, or startup builder with high ownership and urgency.
• Experience with React, TypeScript, Python, and/or Go.
• Experience interfacing with customers or leading technical projects with external stakeholders.
• Experience with teams that build and scale end-to-end production systems.
• Experience with AWS services.
