Operations Research Intern (PhD), Summer 2027

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States; in-person at the hirify.global office.

Salary: $130,600–$192,000 USD annual base salary.

hirify.global develops an on-demand logistics engine and global infrastructure system for a three-sided marketplace of consumers, merchants, and dashers.

What you will do

• Design and implement improvements to the real-time on-demand dispatching algorithm.
• Analyze delivery data at a detailed level, conduct research, and identify new lines of work.
• Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, product managers, and business operators on scalable solutions for consumers, dashers, and merchants.
• Develop, maintain, and ship products as part of the Assignment Engine team during a 12-week internship.
• Receive feedback from mentors and team members.

Requirements

• Current PhD student in operations research, industrial engineering, computer science, or a related field, graduating between Fall 2027 and Summer 2028.
• Research or industry experience solving complex optimization problems through mathematical programming or metaheuristics.
• Strong programming fundamentals, object-oriented and/or functional programming experience, and a solid understanding of algorithms.
• Interest in analyzing, iterating on, and contributing to a real-time dispatch system.
• Experience developing algorithms for logistics problems, especially vehicle routing problems (VRP) and real-time dispatching.
• Experience with mathematical programming software such as CPLEX, Gurobi, Coin-OR, or Xpress.
• Production experience with a JVM-based language such as Java, Kotlin, or Scala.
• Software development lifecycle experience, including clean code, version control, and unit testing.
• Production experience with modern web applications at scale, statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms, SQL, and a visualization tool such as Tableau, Chartio, or Mode.
• Authorization to work in the United States; F-1 students are eligible when using Curricular Practical Training (CPT).
• Applicants must not require J-1 visa support, which hirify.global does not provide for this position.
