Lead Software Engineer - AI Product Development (AI)

Location: Barcelona, Spain; hybrid position working in the office up to 3 days a week, primarily during core business hours in CET.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture and delivery of scalable backend features, microservices, and APIs using Java and Node.js.
• Build end-to-end full-stack product features from concept and implementation through rollout and continuous improvement.
• Integrate LLM-based capabilities, RAG patterns, and agent-based workflows into the platform.
• Improve AI output quality, manage system limitations, optimize performance, and ensure production readiness.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, UX, and domain experts on customer-facing solutions and architectural decisions.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to system scalability, maintainability, reliability, and engineering excellence.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 7 years of backend development experience with Java 11/17, Spring Boot, microservices, scalable distributed systems, and RESTful APIs.
• At least 6 years of experience with frontend technologies including Angular and Node.js, and full-stack product development.
• At least 3 years of experience integrating AI capabilities into production systems using OpenAI or Azure OpenAI APIs, including few-shot prompting, structured outputs, guardrails, AI assistants, and agent-based workflows with tool calling and memory patterns.
• Hands-on experience designing and optimizing RAG pipelines, including chunking, embeddings, and retrieval orchestration.
• Experience evaluating AI systems with Ragas, prompt testing, and regression evaluation.
• Experience building and scaling AI-enabled platforms and services in production environments.
• At least 6 years of experience delivering end-to-end product features, including CI/CD, monitoring, and cloud platforms such as AWS or equivalent.

Nice to have

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automation tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps.
• Familiarity with vector databases and retrieval systems including Azure AI Search, Pinecone, Weaviate, or FAISS.
• Knowledge of Responsible AI practices, including prompt injection mitigation, PII masking, and policy enforcement.
• Experience with experimentation frameworks such as A/B testing and feature flags including Split.io.
• Understanding of platform thinking, shared AI services, and reusable components.
