TL;DR
Senior Director, Power Plant Engineering (Nuclear): Leading the technical direction, integration, and execution of power plant engineering designs across reactor, auxiliary, electrical, instrumentation, control, and balance-of-plant systems with an accent on design maturity, safety, regulatory compliance, and technical risk management. Focus on making consequential plant-level decisions, resolving cross-discipline issues, maintaining the technical baseline, and guiding large multidisciplinary engineering organizations through complex nuclear design and execution.
Location: Onsite at the Alameda, CA headquarters; some travel may be required, up to 25%.
Salary: $258,300–$330,000 per year for employees working onsite in Alameda, California.
Company
hirify.global Power develops fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor technology intended to support clean energy deployment with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation.
What you will do
Lead the Power Plant Engineering organization across Reactor Systems, Pebble Handling and Storage Systems, Reactor Coolant Auxiliary Systems, Instrumentation, Control and Electrical Systems, and Balance of Plant Systems.
Set technical direction and maintain engineering standards, design control, systems engineering practices, and the integrity of the plant technical baseline.
Approve consequential technical decisions, accept technical risk within delegated authority, and resolve disagreements across systems and disciplines.
Ensure designs satisfy requirements, codes, standards, safety functions, program objectives, and lifecycle needs from design through procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and operations.
Maintain visibility and documentation of technical risks, assumptions, margins, interfaces, decisions, design changes, and unresolved issues.
Lead and hold senior technical leaders accountable for the quality, maturity, completeness, and timeliness of engineering work.
Requirements
B.S. or M.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
20+ years of engineering experience supporting nuclear power generation, nuclear design, analysis, licensing, construction, or plant operations.
10+ years of progressive engineering leadership experience managing large, multidisciplinary engineering organizations, typically comprising 100 or more employees.
Prior experience as a Chief Engineer, Design Authority, Engineering Director, or in a comparable senior technical leadership role.
Expertise in Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Nuclear, or another discipline relevant to nuclear power plant design, with working knowledge across major nuclear engineering disciplines and workstreams.
Experience applying design control, configuration management, and technical baseline management in a complex nuclear or similarly regulated engineering environment.
Strong understanding of regulatory requirements, design and operations interfaces, quality assurance programs, and design control processes.
Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering projects through multiple design-maturity stages and making consequential technical decisions.
Success holding senior engineering leaders and organizations accountable across multiple geographic locations.
Knowledge of nuclear safety, safety classification, defense-in-depth, reactor design and analysis, accident and transient response, radiological design, plant systems, design reviews, interface management, design margins, uncertainty management, risk acceptance, and engineering change control.
Ability to evaluate plant-level tradeoffs involving safety, performance, operability, reliability, constructability, cost, schedule, and design maturity without compromising requirements or safety objectives.
Ability to assess, coach, and develop directors, managers, technical authorities, and senior engineers; integrate differing technical perspectives; and determine when issues require escalation, independent review, additional analysis, or plant-level decision-making.
Ability to work in office, manufacturing/industrial, and prototyping/testing environments; use required PPE; occasionally work weekends, flexible schedules, or extended hours.
Nice to have
Experience with first-of-a-kind technologies or programs involving significant technical uncertainty, evolving requirements, and development of organizational capability.
