Lead Backend Engineer (Payments & Billing)

Location: Hybrid; primary residence required in or near an approved city in the United States, Canada, or Mexico. Occasional in-person attendance is required. What you will do

• Lead the architecture, implementation, and operation of backend payment and billing systems supporting subscription revenue at global scale.
• Own billing lifecycles, payment processing, invoicing, reconciliation, financial reliability, international currencies, and local payment methods across hirify.global products.
• Integrate with payment providers including Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, and PayPal while ensuring PCI DSS compliance, tokenization, encryption, and secure data handling.
• Lead agentic engineering across design, implementation, testing, debugging, incident response, and operations; build reusable agent skills and MCP integrations for alert triage, investigations, and anomaly detection.
• Modernize legacy systems, reduce technical debt, improve scalability and observability, and lead migrations and refactors with appropriate AI-assisted workflows.
• Set technical direction, mentor engineers, establish review and verification practices, and collaborate with Product, Finance, Risk, Platform, and Analytics.

Requirements

• 8+ years of backend engineering experience, including deep expertise building and scaling distributed systems for financial or mission-critical workloads.
• Strong foundations in data modeling, transactional consistency, high-throughput architectures, SQL with MySQL or PostgreSQL, and familiarity with NoSQL and caching.
• Experience defining SLOs, implementing metrics and alerts, debugging distributed systems, and leading incident response.
• Strong coding ability in at least one modern backend language such as Ruby, Java, Go, or Python; clean, maintainable, and secure code is expected.
• Hands-on production experience with agentic engineering tools and workflows, including daily use of AI agents and the ability to assess their appropriate use and limitations.
• Ability to rigorously validate AI-generated code, protect sensitive data, and take ownership of every shipped line of code.
• Proven technical leadership in architectural direction, engineering mentorship, large-scale migrations, or modernization efforts.
• Experience establishing patterns, tooling, or review practices adopted by other engineers, including for AI-assisted development.
• Clear communication and cross-functional collaboration with Product, Finance, Risk, Platform, and other teams; participation in mentoring, architecture reviews, or knowledge sharing.

Nice to have

• Strong coding ability in Ruby and deep experience designing and operating payment or billing systems.
• Experience integrating Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, or PayPal and managing multi-currency or local payment methods.
• Knowledge of PCI DSS, encryption, tokenization, fraud prevention, chargebacks, retries, card fingerprinting, and abuse detection.
• Experience leading large-scale migrations between payment providers or billing systems with minimal customer impact.
• Experience building agent skills, MCP integrations, or AI-assisted on-call and incident workflows adopted by other engineers.
• Experience designing human-in-the-loop or AI code-review and merge controls in regulated or PCI-scoped environments.
• Understanding of AI security risks including prompt injection, secrets or PII leakage, and over-permissioned agent credentials.
