Open-Rank Professor, American Civilization

Location: Austin, Texas; on-site. Full-time or part-time appointments are considered, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2027.

Salary: Full-time Assistant Professor salaries in Arts start at $90,000 annually; compensation is competitive and commensurate with rank.

What you will do

• Teach courses in American history, thought, and culture within the Program in American Civilization.
• Guide students toward a comprehensive understanding of America’s intellectual, political, economic, religious, literary, and artistic dimensions.
• Contribute to the core courses The American Founding, American Frontiers, and The American Century.
• Teach interdisciplinary courses and advanced seminars in American history, politics, philosophy, religion, literature, and the arts.
• Maintain a substantive research agenda alongside an annual teaching load of 18 quarter hours, equivalent to a 2/2 semester-system load.

Requirements

• Be a historian or cultural critic specializing in any period of American history, including colonial America, the Founding, the early republic, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the Gilded Age, or the twentieth century.
• Be a first-rate teacher and accomplished scholar.
• Approach America’s past with seriousness, independence of mind, and willingness to engage timely and timeless questions about American national character.
• Support the study of American civilization as a coherent whole across ideals, institutions, and culture.
• Submit a CV and cover letter describing interest in the position, relevant teaching and research experience, and alignment with the university’s mission.

• Ability to tell the American story with moral seriousness and narrative power.
