Senior Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Remote from the USA for candidates residing in CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IL, KS, ME, MA, NJ, NC, NY, OR, TN, TX, VA, OH, or WA; hybrid options are available at physical offices in Austin, Texas and Tampa, Florida. Onsite interviews may be required. Candidates cannot be hired within the city limits of Chicago unless they reside outside the city proper or are willing to self-relocate.

Base salary: $160,000–$200,000 per year for roles based in California, Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey, Washington, or New York. Actual pay depends on location, market demands, experience, knowledge, and skills.

What you will do

• Develop large-scale software applications and new product features while supporting existing functionality.
• Design and improve high-availability services that manage, protect, and maintain millions of endpoints and servers.
• Influence architecture decisions concerning scalability, maintainability, technical debt, performance, and business needs.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, mentor junior engineers, and establish technical standards.
• Own technical initiatives, address challenges using support data, and drive continuous improvements.
• Advocate for quality assurance practices and deliver robust, high-performance software.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent work experience.
• 10+ years of Java software development experience, particularly with product applications.
• 5+ years of experience with highly scalable systems.
• Experience scaling systems and solving complex system design challenges.
• Strong knowledge of object-oriented programming design principles and practices.
• Expertise in API design and RESTful services, including frameworks such as Jersey or Spring.
• Proficiency in relational database design and development.
• In-depth knowledge of quality testing practices and high-quality software delivery.
• Candidates must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents due to federal government security requirements.

Nice to have

• Experience with caching systems, particularly Redis.
• Experience with Java, Kotlin, C++, Golang, Postgres, and AWS-based scalable cloud services.
• Knowledge of large-scale datastore bottlenecks, asynchronous application design, and client-server architecture.
