Senior Data Engineer (GCP)

Location: Soho, London, United Kingdom. Hybrid working with 3 days in the office from Tuesday to Thursday.

What you will do

• Lead the design and delivery of scalable data pipelines using GCP services including BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub and Cloud Storage, supporting data quality and real-time processing.
• Own dimensional data models and database designs for business analytics and intelligence, using GCP technologies such as Bigtable, Spanner and Firestore.
• Automate data workflows, optimize storage and processing costs, and establish orchestration and performance-tuning practices with Cloud Composer.
• Implement GCP security practices, access controls, data-governance policies and safeguards for sensitive information.
• Lead architectural decisions, critical incident resolution, monitoring and alerting standards for reliable batch and real-time systems.
• Partner with business analysts, IT and other teams, translate complex requirements into data solutions, mentor engineers and influence technical standards.

Requirements

• Significant experience in data engineering or data warehousing with large-scale, complex datasets.
• Advanced SQL and Python skills, including appropriate use of AI-assisted development tools.
• Strong knowledge of data-modelling techniques.
• Deep experience with cloud data services and technologies, ideally in the GCP ecosystem, including Dataflow, Pub/Sub, BigQuery or Vertex AI.
• Proven experience designing and implementing robust ELT pipelines for real-time and large-scale batch processing.
• Proven ability to deploy and maintain data infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code principles and tools such as Terraform.
• Experience with Airflow environment management and Docker.
• Experience contributing to an AI roadmap and evaluating AI tooling, including coding agents, for the development lifecycle.
• Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, lead cross-functional technical work and translate ambiguous requirements into robust data solutions.
• Demonstrable experience applying data-governance, privacy and security best practices in a regulated environment.
• Proactive and curious approach with the ability to anticipate and resolve system inefficiencies.
• Track record of end-to-end ownership for the quality, reliability and performance of business-critical data solutions, plus experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical standards.
