Staff Data Engineer (BigQuery)

Location: London, England, United Kingdom; hybrid working with 2 in-office days per week and up to 22 working days per year to work from anywhere

What you will do

• Set architecture and engineering standards for a new data platform alongside Staff and Lead Data Engineers.
• Design, build, and maintain reliable, tested, and idempotent ELT pipelines on BigQuery using dbt and Dagster+.
• Create accurate and performant data models, data contracts, observability, lineage, and documentation for analytical and AI/LLM-based use cases.
• Support the existing Azure platform and maintain high availability while the platform is migrated over the next 12 months.
• Lead performance monitoring, tuning, cost optimization, and internal data-platform improvements.
• Work with analysts across MI, Marketing, Product, Underwriting, and Pricing; mentor junior data engineers and provide technical oversight.

Requirements

• Advanced SQL, including complex queries, partitioning, clustering, and cost-aware query optimization.
• Experience with modern orchestration and ELT tooling, ideally Dagster and dbt.
• Strong Python skills for data engineering.
• Solid understanding of data warehousing, ETL/ELT processes, and dimensional modeling.
• Experience designing data models and documentation usable by AI/LLM-based analytics tools, including semantic layers, metadata, and access controls.
• In-depth knowledge of cloud data infrastructure, ideally GCP; Azure or AWS is also considered.
• Hands-on experience building CI/CD pipelines to test and deploy data code reliably across environments.
• Proficiency with Git and DevOps for version control and collaboration.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Nice to have

• API integration experience.
• Experience working in an agile environment directly with analysts and business stakeholders to shape requirements, agree priorities, and deliver incremental value.
• Experience controlling BigQuery cost and performance through slot management, partitioning strategy, and usage monitoring.
• Experience with Azure orchestration and ELT tooling.
• Understanding of visualization and dashboard products such as Power BI, Tableau, or Qlik.
