Principal Portfolio Manager (Technology)

Location: Welwyn Garden City, United Kingdom; hybrid, with 60% of the week spent collaborating at office locations or local sites and the remainder remotely.

What you will do

• Act as a strategic portfolio partner and trusted advisor to Technology Leadership Team members, Directorate leaders, and senior business stakeholders.
• Shape portfolio strategies, plans, assumptions, investment priorities, capacity plans, governance, and delivery approaches using data and insight.
• Represent Directorate portfolios in enterprise portfolio processes and establish consistent practices across Technology while respecting local delivery needs.
• Identify and help resolve strategic dependencies across Directorates and enterprise initiatives, coordinating Portfolio, Product, Engineering, Architecture, Finance, and People functions.
• Maintain integrated visibility of programmes, products, investments, resources, dependencies, risks, and performance with portfolio and PMO teams.
• Improve portfolio maturity through coaching, communities of practice, better processes, tooling, data standards, operating models, automation, and AI.

Requirements

• Strong understanding of portfolio management in large-scale, complex technology environments.
• Significant experience in enterprise-level portfolio management, PPMO, technology governance, strategic planning, or business management within a large, complex organisation.
• Excellent senior stakeholder management, partnering, influencing, relationship-building, communication, and facilitation skills across multiple organisational units and leadership groups.
• Experience working across product, programme, and engineering delivery models.
• Strong analytical capability, including turning complex portfolio information into clear, actionable insight.
• Experience supporting portfolio planning, investment governance, prioritisation, capacity management, benefits tracking, financial governance, benefits management, delivery performance management, and delivery accountability outside direct line control.
• Experience operating at the intersection of Technology and Business, translating strategic objectives into portfolio priorities and delivery outcomes.
• Ability to work effectively across central functions and local Directorate portfolios, with autonomy in ambiguous, complex, and fast-moving environments.
• Experience improving portfolio processes, reporting, governance, tooling, or operating models.

Nice to have

• Certification in a recognised portfolio, programme, project, or agile delivery methodology.
