Senior Software Engineer (Java/AWS)

Location: MEX-TWP Remote Office, Mexico; on-site five days a week, with certain exceptions for newsgathering and business travel.

What you will do

• Design, build, test, deploy, and operate applications and services supporting subscription products.
• Own technical solutions across design, implementation, deployment, observability, production support, and continuous improvement.
• Design and maintain scalable AWS infrastructure using services including ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS, IAM, and CloudWatch.
• Build Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, developer workflows, and operational tooling.
• Develop Java backend services and APIs, use Node.js for supporting services and tooling, and contribute to React and JavaScript/TypeScript applications when needed.
• Improve observability and reliability, participate in on-call incident response, communicate technical decisions, and mentor engineers.

Requirements

• BA/BS in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of hands-on AWS experience designing, deploying, operating, and troubleshooting production workloads.
• 4+ years of production experience with CI/CD, deployment automation, and Infrastructure as Code.
• 3+ years of backend development experience with Java, including production services and APIs; Java is the primary backend language.
• 2+ years of professional experience with Node.js in services, automation, developer tooling, or infrastructure tooling.
• Experience administering and operating self-hosted engineering platforms such as Jenkins, Airflow, or similar technologies in production.
• Strong understanding of cloud architecture, networking, IAM, security, scalability, reliability, and operational best practices.
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code using AWS CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform, or comparable technologies, and with containerized workloads such as Docker and ECS.
• Strong production operations and observability experience, including logs, metrics, tracing, dashboards, alerting, troubleshooting, on-call support, incident response, and post-incident remediation.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals, independent ownership of complex technical work, and strong written and verbal communication across organizational boundaries.
• Significant hands-on use of AI-assisted engineering tools, with concrete examples of applying AI to infrastructure, automation, software development, troubleshooting, incident investigation, documentation, or other engineering workflows.

Nice to have

• 7+ years of AWS, DevOps, SRE, or cloud infrastructure experience, including ownership of highly available, scalable production environments.
• 5+ years designing and operating CI/CD, deployment automation, and Infrastructure as Code across multiple applications or teams.
• 5+ years of Java backend development and 3+ years with Node.js.
• 2+ years with React or a comparable modern frontend framework and the ability to support modern JavaScript/TypeScript applications.
• Deep experience with AWS CDK, reusable infrastructure patterns, constructs, deployment tooling, and AWS services including ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS, IAM, and CloudWatch.
• Significant experience administering and evolving Jenkins, Airflow, or comparable self-hosted engineering platforms.
• Experience building reusable infrastructure, deployment patterns, automation, and developer tooling for engineering teams.
• Experience with DataDog and AWS-native monitoring services, platform engineering, self-service tooling, mentoring, and cross-team influence.
• Advanced use of AI-assisted engineering tools and experience helping other engineers apply AI across infrastructure, operations, automation, troubleshooting, and software development.
