TL;DR
Experimental Physics Intern M/F (Quantum Hardware): Developing and operating a cryogenic and RF experiment for broadband flux noise sensing in superconducting quantum circuits with an accent on resonator characterization, measurement-chain design, and Python-based instrumentation. Focus on modelling feedback-loop limitations, analysing noise spectral density, and experimentally validating approaches that extend the measurement bandwidth.
Location: Hybrid in Aubervilliers, France
Company
Alice & Bob is developing a universal, fault-tolerant quantum computer based on superconducting Schrödinger cat qubits and autonomous quantum error correction.
What you will do
Design and assemble the cryogenic and RF measurement chain, including wiring, filtering, amplification, and instrumentation.
Implement and document measurement and control software in Python.
Calibrate flux-tunable resonators and measure flux noise power spectral density and related metrics.
Model and measure feedback-loop bandwidth, latency, and readout-chain noise contributions to identify broadband-operation limits.
Evaluate, implement, and experimentally validate alternative locking, readout, or analysis approaches.
Document experiments and present progress and findings to the HERMES team while working with quantum and RF characterisation engineers.
Requirements
Master's student in physics, engineering physics, or electrical/electronics engineering with a strong interest in experimental work.
Good theoretical understanding of electromagnetism and microwave systems, combined with practical programming skills.
Proficient English.
Prior lab or project experience in RF/microwave measurements or low-temperature physics.
Solid understanding of magnetic fields, flux, and electromagnetic coupling.
Knowledge of microwave engineering, including waveguides, resonators, transmission lines, and S-parameters.
Proficiency in Python for instrument control, data acquisition, and analysis.
Understanding of feedback and control loops, including gain, bandwidth, latency, and stability.
Familiarity with noise characterisation and spectral analysis, including power spectral density; hands-on ability to assemble and debug measurement setups; rigour in documentation and analysis; autonomy, curiosity, and a problem-solving mindset.
Nice to have
Experience with cryostats or superconducting quantum circuits.
Culture & Benefits
Six-month internship starting between January and March 2027.
One day off per month.
Half of transportation costs covered according to French law.
Meal vouchers through Swile and access to a fully equipped, regularly stocked kitchen.
Early-stage startup environment with knowledge sharing, learning, and space to develop new ideas.
