Backend Engineer (Haskell)

Location: Utrecht, Netherlands; hybrid work with at least two days per week in the Utrecht office. EU citizenship or a valid work permit for the Netherlands is required, and candidates are preferably already living in the Netherlands.

Salary: €4,000–€5,700 gross per month based on a 40-hour work week.

What you will do

• Plan and shape the Creatives suite of features with the team.
• Architect, develop, test, and maintain image-related product features for the Image Editor and related services.
• Scale distributed services to handle an order-of-magnitude increase in throughput while keeping the application fast and responsive.
• Improve application reliability, robustness, scalability, and performance.
• Collaborate with product and platform teams to integrate image-manipulation features into other parts of the tool.
• Review pull requests and collaborate with other backend and frontend engineers.

Requirements

• Good programming skills in Haskell or a similar typed functional language.
• Familiarity with other programming languages and polyglot programming, especially Python and Rust.
• Approximately 4–5 years of professional software engineering experience.
• Experience tuning and scaling a large application.
• Experience with web development, web technologies, and APIs.
• Familiarity with SQL and relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL.
• Good working knowledge of Linux, Git, and the command line.
• EU citizenship or a valid work permit for the Netherlands.
• Availability for at least 32 hours per week and willingness to spend two days per week in the Utrecht office.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of Haskell libraries including Warp, Conduit, Async, Servant, Aeson, or Effectful.
• Knowledge of Rust and its ecosystem.
• Prior experience with image processing.
• Some knowledge of TypeScript and React.
• Passion for providing customer value and identifying the underlying question behind a request.
