Staff Engineer - Payment (Fintech)

Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands; hybrid setup with two remote working days per week.

What you will do

• Define the high-level architecture of payment gateways, ledgers, and payment orchestration systems.
• Drive consistency, correctness, auditability, reconciliation, and strong transactional guarantees across asynchronous payment flows.
• Oversee technical execution, conduct code reviews, and champion reactive programming and contract-first API design.
• Lead and mentor hybrid core and extended delivery teams through technical discussions and architecture workshops.
• Maintain PCI DSS compliance through secure credential handling and Secret Manager integration.
• Partner with Product Managers on BIN Lookup, surcharging, Dynamic Currency Conversion, CI/CD, and zero-downtime Cloud Run deployments.

Requirements

• Extensive software engineering leadership experience at Staff, Principal, or Lead Architect level.
• Expertise in Java, Spring Boot, Spring WebFlux, and Project Reactor.
• Deep experience with Google Cloud Platform, especially Cloud Run, Firestore, and Pub/Sub.
• Proven payments industry experience, including PCI DSS requirements and financial calculation accuracy.
• Experience with Liquibase, reactive database drivers such as R2DBC, and distributed systems design.
• Strong communication skills for stakeholder management and cross-functional technical leadership.

Nice to have

• Experience with intelligent payment routing, reconciliation, auditability, EU banking regulation, or SEPA rails.
