TL;DR
Staff Power Electronics Engineer (Space): Developing next-generation power electronics hardware for satellite spacecraft payloads with an accent on power architecture, converter design, circuit analysis, and verification. Focus on leading board bring-up, qualification testing, production release, and mentoring engineers across complex space power systems.

Location: On-site in El Segundo, California, United States. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, conditional residents, asylees, refugees, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations under U.S. Government Space Technology Export Regulations.

Company

hirify.global develops communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms.

What you will do

  • Define electrical power system architectures, derive subsystem requirements, and perform trade studies for spacecraft payloads.
  • Design DC-DC converters, motor drives, inverters, power management and control circuits, and analog and power electronics modules from concept through production release.
  • Model and analyze designs, including worst-case, stress, small-signal, FMEA, reliability, and power integrity analysis.
  • Develop verification, compliance, integration, qualification, and production acceptance test plans; lead board bring-up and design verification testing.
  • Lead system integration, qualification campaigns, production transition, and manufacturing support.
  • Lead a small power electronics engineering team, mentor younger engineers, monitor industry trends, and support innovation and intellectual property generation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related field from an accredited university.
  • At least 9 years of experience designing analog and power electronics.
  • Experience with electrical power systems and subsystems, including power architecture, power requirements, SWAP-C trade studies, converter topology selection, and power management and control blocks.
  • Experience modeling and controlling DC-DC converters and designing isolated and non-isolated power stages, including linear regulators, Buck, Boost, Buck-boost, Flyback, Forward, Half-bridge, Full-bridge, and resonant converters.
  • Experience designing custom signal and power magnetics and low-noise, EMC-oriented power filters.
  • Experience developing design verification test plans, requirement compliance matrices, system integration and qualification test plans, and production acceptance test plans.
  • Experience with WCA, stress analysis, FMEA, and reliability analysis for power supplies.
  • Extensive hands-on experience testing and troubleshooting electronics and power converters with oscilloscopes, impedance analyzers, spectrum analyzers, electronic loads, and signal generators.
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools such as Altium, OrCAD, Allegro, or Xpedition, and with analysis and simulation tools such as SPICE, LTSPICE, SIMetrix/SIMPLIS, PLECS, Simulink, MATLAB, MathCAD, ANSYS Q3D, SiWave, or HyperLynx.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to have

  • Master of Science or PhD in Electrical Engineering with a research focus in power electronics.
  • Experience designing high-reliability analog and power electronics for automotive, space, or defense applications.
  • Knowledge of space radiation environments and radiation effects in electronics.
  • Experience with GaN or SiC wide-bandgap power semiconductor devices, soft switching, resonant converters, inverters, motor drives, and advanced DC-DC converter control schemes.
  • Experience with board-level power integrity simulation using Ansys SiWave or HyperLynx.
  • Experience with isolation and grounding, fault-tolerant design, failure-mode effects analysis, and thermal management.
  • Programming skills for hardware testing and data processing, such as Python or MATLAB.
  • Knowledge of MPPT, solar power applications, battery sizing and management systems, electric propulsion power conversion, and spacecraft power conditioning, management, and distribution units.
  • Experience designing and testing power electronics units to automotive, industrial, space, or military standards such as FCC, CISPR, UL, ECSS, NASA, or MIL standards.

Culture & Benefits

  • Full-time, on-site work in a dynamic and cross-functional engineering environment.
  • Hands-on, interactive, and autonomous work across the organization.
  • Opportunities for learning, development, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
