TL;DR
Physical Resource Estimation Intern (Quantum Computing): Reviewing compact block-encoding techniques and estimating the physical cat-qubit count and runtime for a selected example on a fault-tolerant quantum computer architecture with an accent on logical resource comparison and physical resource mapping. Focus on implementing reproducible resource estimates, documenting quantitative results, and analyzing quantum algorithms and error-corrected architectures.

Location: Paris, France; hybrid workplace. The internship starts in January 2027 and lasts 6 months.

Company

Alice & Bob is developing a universal, fault-tolerant quantum computer based on superconducting Schrödinger cat qubits, with a team of more than 250 people from over 35 countries.

What you will do

  • Review compact block-encoding techniques, including block encodings for models such as SYK, and compare their logical resources.
  • Estimate physical resources for a selected example on a superconducting cat-qubit architecture.
  • Map logical resources onto the cat-qubit architecture.
  • Compute the physical cat-qubit count and runtime using reproducible code.
  • Document the resource-estimation results and communicate the technical findings.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an MSc or PhD program in physics or mathematics.
  • Proficient in English.
  • No minimum professional experience is required.
  • Strong interest in quantum computing and quantum algorithms, with a solid understanding of quantum computing fundamentals, including the circuit model, quantum gates, and basic quantum information.
  • Strong linear algebra and mathematical reasoning skills.
  • Basic programming skills, preferably in Python.
  • Ability to read and synthesize research literature.
  • Clear written and oral communication of technical results.
  • Ability to work independently with autonomy and rigour on a well-defined research project.

Nice to have

  • Prior research project or internship experience in quantum computing.
  • Knowledge of quantum algorithms such as block encodings, qubitization, or phase estimation.
  • Familiarity with fault-tolerant quantum computing or quantum error correction.

Culture & Benefits

  • One day off per month.
  • Half of transportation costs covered according to French law.
  • Meal vouchers through Swile.
  • Access to a fully equipped and regularly stocked kitchen.
  • Collaborative environment focused on knowledge sharing, innovation, and professional growth.
