Senior Backend Engineer (Ruby/Logistics)

Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands; hybrid work with 2 recommended office days per week.

Salary: €76,800–€104,000 gross annually, excluding 8% holiday pay.

What you will do

• Design, build, maintain, monitor, and improve scalable backend services and APIs for mid-mile transport and warehouse operations.
• Own technical initiatives from problem framing and system design through delivery, monitoring, iteration, and incident follow-up.
• Make architecture and trade-off decisions balancing scalability, reliability, maintainability, and technical debt over a 6–12-month horizon.
• Evolve a large Ruby on Rails modular monolith toward clearer module boundaries and well-defined APIs.
• Collaborate with Product, Operations, Decision Science, and engineering teams through discovery, RFCs, technical discussions, and dependency alignment.
• Review code, pair on complex problems, document changes, mentor and onboard engineers, participate in hiring, and support on-call rotations.

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience, including building systems and owning work from design through production.
• Solid experience with Ruby, or the ability and motivation to learn the backend stack quickly.
• Good understanding of API design, database-backed systems, observability, and operating production services.
• Ability to work independently on problems of diverse scope and advise teammates on difficult technical matters.
• Pragmatic approach to balancing delivery speed, reliability, and long-term maintainability, with comfort working through ambiguity and breaking complex problems into technical steps.
• Commitment to knowledge sharing, mentoring, direct and useful feedback, and raising engineering standards.
• Ability to communicate and collaborate clearly with engineers, product managers, operations, and non-technical stakeholders.
• Excellent written and spoken English.

Nice to have

• Experience with logistics, warehouse management, fulfillment, or operational workflows.
• Experience integrating software with physical devices or modularizing a large monolith.
