TL;DR
Master Thesis - CFD Prediction of Impingement Cooling Applied to Gas Turbine Combustors (CFD): Developing and evaluating CFD methods for impingement cooling of an SGT-800 combustor heat shield with an accent on thermal boundary conditions, mesh efficiency, and comparison with measurement data. Focus on RANS and LES simulations, optimizing accuracy with a minimum number of cells, and comparing the methodology with Siemens Energy's standard approach.

Location: Finspång, Östergötland County, Sweden

Company

hirify.global develops energy technologies and gas turbine systems for reliable, sustainable, and lower-emission power generation.

What you will do

  • Evaluate impingement-cooling test cases against correlations from open literature.
  • Investigate mesh strategies using RANS and LES simulations to achieve the best accuracy with a minimum number of cells.
  • Apply the selected methodology to part of the SGT-800 combustor.
  • Compare the improved methodology with hirify.global's standard approach based on accuracy versus number of cells.
  • Use measurement data from an instrumented prototype engine to assess thermal boundary conditions and metal-temperature predictions.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a master's program in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong background in heat transfer, FEM, and/or CFD analysis.
  • Background in programming.
  • Proficiency in numerical modelling and simulation software.
  • Good problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

Culture & Benefits

  • Collaborative Computer Aided Engineering of Combustion Systems team with specialists available for technical support.
  • Close collaboration with turbine and compressor CFD/HT departments.
  • Benefits may include reduced working hours, advance vacation, and a health care allowance.
  • Possible flexible workplace arrangement.
  • Focus on decarbonization, new technologies, energy transformation, and sustainable power generation.

Hiring process

  • Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and the position may be filled before the stated deadline.
  • Application deadline: 9 November 2025.
