Senior Engineer, Billing and Payments (Fintech)

Location: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia; remote option available; hybrid workplace.

What you will do

• Build and extend payment flows, payment methods, partner integrations, and venue payment experiences.
• Investigate payment failures, fix root causes, and improve reliability, observability, and operational signals.
• Own venue settlements, billing, invoicing, fees, tax, collections, and reconciliation across Australia, the UK, and New Zealand.
• Work with Finance to reconcile money end to end and ensure invoices, ledgers, settlements, and payouts match.
• Replace manual processes and support tickets with product features and automated collections.
• Review code, protect financial correctness with tests, deliver projects end to end, and mentor a mid-level engineer.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years building production payments, billing, or other systems where correctness is measured in cents.
• Working knowledge of card payment authorization, capture, refunds, settlement, and payment failure modes.
• Hands-on experience integrating with a modern payment provider such as Stripe.
• Experience building or operating billing and invoicing systems, including tax and collections.
• Understanding of double-entry accounting, ledgers, reconciliation, and matching records for every movement of money.
• Strong backend engineering skills in a modern language on cloud infrastructure, with thorough testing of financial logic.
• Experience delivering significant production projects end to end and debugging intermittent issues to root cause.
• Ability to work daily with Finance and Customer Support and translate their problems into system changes.
• Fluency with AI development tools and sound judgment about their appropriate use.

Nice to have

• Experience at a fintech, payments company, or marketplace settling money to merchants or venues.
• Familiarity with acquirer and bank integrations or payment schemes in Australia, the UK, or New Zealand.
• Familiarity with GST/VAT and e-invoicing across the relevant markets.
• Experience with a serverless AWS stack and event-driven systems.
• Exposure to PCI DSS, ISO 27001, or financial audit requirements.
• Experience in hospitality technology or an interest in restaurants and dining.
