TL;DR
PhD Research Internship 2027 (Quantum Error Correction): Investigating quantum error-correction experiments through algorithms, simulations, decoding methods, and architectural models with an accent on quantum-classical systems, computer architecture, and hardware-software co-design. Focus on reducing compute, communication, memory, latency, and power requirements, analyzing decoding trade-offs, and producing reproducible research code.
Location: Hybrid, based at the US office in Cambridge, Massachusetts; full-time for 10–12 weeks. Authorization to work in the United States is required for the duration of the internship.
Salary: $55.70 per hour, DOE.
Company
hirify.global develops quantum error-correction technology and partners with quantum hardware providers and government agencies to advance fault-tolerant quantum computing.
What you will do
Develop algorithms, simulations, or architectural models to evaluate quantum error-correction approaches.
Investigate ways to reduce compute, communication, memory, latency, and power requirements for QEC systems.
Explore trade-offs between decoding performance, logical error suppression, and classical resource requirements.
Collaborate with quantum scientists and engineers across QEC theory, decoding, software, and hardware.
Analyze results and communicate findings through technical discussions, presentations, and written reports.
Produce clear, reproducible research code and supporting documentation.
Requirements
Currently pursuing a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or another related technical field.
Research experience in at least one relevant area: running quantum circuits on quantum hardware; decoding algorithms or quantum error-correcting codes; computational models, simulations, or research software; programming in Python, C, C++, or another relevant language; computer systems and architecture; or computer architecture and quantum-classical systems.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to communicate complex technical ideas clearly.
Ability to take initiative and work effectively with researchers and engineers from different disciplines.
Authorization to work in the United States for the duration of the internship.
Availability to work full-time for 10–12 weeks.
Nice to have
Research experience with qLDPC or surface codes.
Familiarity with QEC decoding or predecoding techniques.
Experience exploring classical resource requirements for fault-tolerant quantum computing.
Experience with scientific computing, quantum circuit simulation, or QEC simulation tools.
Contributions to academic publications, open-source software, or collaborative research projects.
Experience with hardware-software or compiler-hardware co-design.
Understanding of latency, bandwidth, or power constraints affecting quantum control and decoding systems.
Culture & Benefits
Diverse, collaborative environment bringing together software and hardware development, quantum information theory, physics, and mathematics specialists.
Global team representing more than 20 nationalities.
Free snacks and refreshments.
Regular social and cultural events.
Reasonable role-related expenses may be reimbursed, but travel to Cambridge at the beginning or end of the internship and accommodation during the internship are not covered.
Interns must sign an agreement assigning ownership of intellectual property produced during the internship to hirify.global.
