Senior Data Platform Engineer (BigQuery)

Location: Cork, Ireland; hybrid 3+2 with a minimum of 3 days at the office and up to 2 days at home

What you will do

• Administer the BigQuery platform, including IAM, service accounts, project and dataset structures, cost visibility, and performance optimisation.
• Monitor and troubleshoot Fivetran connectors and maintain reliable ingestion into BigQuery.
• Manage Dataplex policy tags, taxonomies, PII masking, and fine-grained access permissions.
• Advise Data Engineering and Analytics teams on BigQuery partitioning, clustering, query optimisation, cost management, and new platform features.
• Monitor ELT data integrity, freshness, and performance from ingestion through downstream reporting.
• Lead incident response and root-cause analysis while creating runbooks, escalation paths, and recovery procedures.

Requirements

• Strong production experience with Google Cloud Platform, especially BigQuery, and hands-on Dataplex experience.
• Experience with GCP IAM, service accounts, least-privilege access administration, policy tags, taxonomies, and column-level masking.
• Experience operating an ELT ingestion tool such as Fivetran, Airbyte, or CData in a production data environment.
• At least 3 years of experience in data platform or cloud platform operations, including monitoring, incident response, and root-cause analysis.
• Strong SQL skills, data-modelling fluency, and experience with GCP CLI plus Python or Bash scripting.
• Experience working with regulated or PII-sensitive data environments and strong documentation discipline.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with dbt, Tableau or another BI platform, and business-system pipelines such as Salesforce or NetSuite.
• Experience in a SaaS environment with high data-freshness and business-continuity requirements.
• Relevant Google Cloud certification, such as Professional Data Engineer or Professional Cloud Architect.
