Engineering Manager, Benefits

Location: New York City office with a hybrid work arrangement

Base wage: $212,000–$274,000 per year for the New York City office

What you will do

• Lead and oversee a team of software engineers as a player-coach, combining hands-on technical work with people management.
• Prioritize, schedule, and execute projects with Engineering, Product, and Design partners.
• Define the team’s long-term strategy and quarterly roadmap, including goals and success metrics.
• Coordinate with internal teams and external providers to deliver reliable, scalable benefits solutions.
• Mentor, guide, hire, develop, and retain a high-performing engineering team.
• Lead technical discussions and improve workflows and user experiences for benefits stakeholders.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience as a software engineer working on production web applications.
• At least 1 year of experience managing a team of engineers.
• Experience prioritizing, crafting, and achieving plans.
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Empathy, interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
• Understanding of data structures, data stores, algorithms, distributed systems, and common web development patterns.

• Experience working in benefits, HR technology, or another highly regulated domain.
