Development Scientist (Life Sciences)

Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland, United States. The role is laboratory-based, with up to 70% of the day spent at a laboratory bench and occasional work at heights above four feet.

Annual base salary: $128,300–$200,500, with potential discretionary or non-discretionary bonuses.

What you will do

• Develop, design, and execute experiments supporting research, feasibility, product development, and qualification projects.
• Prepare experimental procedures, laboratory records, batch and test documentation, and related development materials.
• Analyze complex data using statistical methods and software, preparing tables, graphs, findings, and recommendations.
• Troubleshoot and optimize experiments while communicating issues, solutions, and project recommendations to managers and peers.
• Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams and other business units on project and product deliverables.
• Manage direct-report objectives, accountabilities, priorities, performance, and professional development when applicable.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Life Sciences, Engineering, or a related field preferred; a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree may be considered with additional relevant experience.
• At least four years of hands-on laboratory experience; immunoassay development in an industrial environment is desirable.
• Training and experience with Biosafety Level 2 techniques is required.
• Strong scientific, analytical, statistical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, GraphPad Prism, and SharePoint.
• Ability to work with chemical reagents and BSL-2 materials, including human blood or blood products, and lift up to 25 pounds when required.

Nice to have

• Postdoctoral or industrial research experience.
• Supervisory or management experience.
• Strong publication record.
• Experience with the MSD platform, including extensive hands-on experience for candidates considered with a Bachelor’s degree.
