Senior Software Engineer (Embedded Systems)

Location: Site-based hybrid role in Carlsbad, California; Tempe, Arizona; Englewood, Colorado; or Seattle, Washington, United States. Employees must work at least 3 days per week from a hirify.global office or designated work location. Travel up to 10%.

Salary: $140,500–$221,500 annually. For specific locations in San Jose, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the New York City metropolitan area: $174,000–$261,000 annually.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and test Linux-based embedded software and support applications for Mobility Access Servers used for inflight WiFi and streaming.
• Work across the software stack, including bootloaders, application services, REST interfaces, hardware interfaces, ARINC controllers, cellular device controllers, and low-level driver support.
• Maintain CI/CD systems using GitHub Actions, Artifactory, Vault, and GitHub, while improving virtual and bare-metal testing.
• Investigate production failures using system logs and field data from live aircraft deployments, driving issues to root cause.
• Manage ZFS storage pools, disk health monitoring, containerized services, Docker, and k3s on embedded hardware.
• Improve security through secret and key rotation, file integrity monitoring, penetration-test remediation, code reviews, and software quality practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of hands-on embedded software experience with C, C++, Rust, Go, Bash, or Python.
• Strong Linux administration skills, including systemd service lifecycle, boot-process debugging, and log-based forensics.
• Experience with Docker and/or Kubernetes or k3s, CI/CD and DevOps practices, Git, GitHub, Vault, and artifact management platforms.
• Experience debugging field incidents and production system failures, evaluating software architecture, and performing requirement-based testing.
• Valid work permit or visa for the United States location where the role is performed is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with AlmaLinux, OpenWRT, Yocto, Buildroot, or other embedded-optimized Linux frameworks.
• Knowledge of bootloader and application bring-up, cgroups, MGLRU, and embedded resource optimization.
• Deep familiarity with ZFS storage management, device naming, disk failure analysis, and systemd storage integration.
• Experience authoring Kubernetes and Helm charts for embedded hardware deployments.
• Familiarity with Jenkins, Artifactory, GitHub Actions, and AI coding tools such as GitHub Copilot.
