Principal Software Engineer (Search Platform)

Location: Flexible work from an office, home, or a combination of both. Hiring is available in countries where hirify.global has a legal entity.

What you will do

• Architect and lead high-scale search solutions for the Jira Platform Search organization.
• Drive the transformation of core monolithic services into resilient microservices serving billions of daily requests.
• Define technical roadmaps, scope large-scale initiatives, and lead delivery from architectural design through production launch.
• Establish scalable architecture standards, improve operational excellence, and resolve critical system defects.
• Partner with engineering, product, and architecture teams on company-wide programs.
• Mentor engineers and raise technical rigor through documentation, code reviews, and technical guidance.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in hands-on software or technology architecture roles with end-to-end SDLC ownership.
• Deep production expertise with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch and strong knowledge of Lucene indexing and query-execution internals.
• Experience designing tenant isolation, data partitioning, shard placement, routing, and capacity strategies for distributed search systems.
• Track record of improving search latency, indexing throughput, availability, and infrastructure efficiency.
• Expertise in reliable ingestion, index freshness, data correctness, permission-aware search, and online reindexing.
• Strong experience with distributed architectures, cloud-native services, asynchronous systems, and high-throughput cloud infrastructure.

Nice to have

• Bachelor's degree, ideally in Computer Science.
• Hands-on familiarity with Java, Kotlin, or the Kubernetes ecosystem.
• Experience with Lucene, Solr, PostgreSQL, Kafka, DynamoDB, AWS, or GCP.
