What you will do

• Lead and support research in geotechnical infrastructure systems, intelligent monitoring, and emerging geotechnical engineering technologies.
• Apply artificial intelligence and machine learning to infrastructure performance prediction, data-driven modeling, risk assessment, and resilient transportation systems.
• Develop AI/ML tools and data analytics workflows using field, laboratory, sensor, and infrastructure-monitoring data.
• Prepare research proposals, peer-reviewed publications, and grant reports while collaborating with internal and external research teams.
• Mentor undergraduate and graduate students and support their research presentations and publications.
• Help plan, equip, and operationalize research laboratories, and teach courses according to departmental needs.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering, or a closely related engineering field.
• Strong knowledge of geotechnical fundamentals, soil behavior, numerical modeling, data analysis, and visualization.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially and commitment to mentoring students.
• Employment is based in Prairie View, Texas, United States. The position is security-sensitive and requires a criminal history investigation and credential verification.

Nice to have

• Research experience in geo-environmental or transportation geotechnics, including slope stability, pavement, landfill design, smart monitoring, or soil behavior.
• Experience with grant proposals, technical conferences, peer-reviewed publications, and university teaching.
• Experience with PLAXIS, GeoStudio, FLAC, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, MATLAB, Python, or R.
• Laboratory or field research experience involving soil characterization, geophysical testing, or sensor-based monitoring.
• Experience with machine learning, probabilistic analysis, and multidisciplinary research teams.
