TL;DR
Hardware Engineering Internship 2027 (FPGA/Quantum Computing): Investigating architectural optimisations and enhancing decoder architecture for quantum error correction with an accent on FPGA development, processing speed, and resource-performance trade-offs. Focus on evaluating hardware design approaches, balancing space and time constraints, and communicating technical work through discussions, presentations, and documentation.

Location: Hybrid internship based at the head office in Cambridge, UK; full-time for 10–12 weeks during the summer vacation period. Candidates must already have the right to work in the UK for the full internship duration.

Salary: £30,000–£35,000 per annum, paid pro rata for the internship duration.

Company

hirify.global develops quantum error correction technology to help make fault-tolerant quantum computing possible, working with quantum hardware providers and government agencies.

What you will do

  • Collaborate with hardware and software engineers to investigate and evaluate architectural optimisations.
  • Enhance decoder architecture to improve flexibility and processing speed.
  • Explore hardware design approaches and assess their potential benefits.
  • Make design decisions involving space and time trade-offs, functionality, resource use, and performance.
  • Communicate technical work through discussions, presentations, and written documentation.
  • Develop practical knowledge of FPGA development, quantum computing, and quantum error correction.

Requirements

  • Current student status is required: studying in at least the second year of a Bachelor’s degree, partway through a Master’s degree, or partway through a PhD.
  • Studying Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related technical subject.
  • Proficiency in Python and a solid understanding of low-level computer architecture.
  • Strong critical-thinking, problem-solving, written communication, verbal communication, teamwork, and initiative skills.
  • Availability to work full-time for 10–12 weeks during the summer vacation period.
  • Existing UK right-to-work permission is required for the full internship duration; UK student visa holders must confirm that their visa conditions permit the internship.

Nice to have

  • RTL development experience for FPGA or ASIC systems.
  • Familiarity with or interest in quantum computing.
  • Knowledge of optimisation concepts, performance trade-offs, networking principles, version control, testing, or debugging tools.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work alongside software and hardware engineers, mathematicians, quantum information theorists, and physicists.
  • Receive dedicated supervision and work on a project aligned with existing skills.
  • Opportunity to contribute to open-source compilers, research papers, and software tools.
  • Private medical insurance, a health cash plan, life assurance, and additional benefits.
  • Diverse environment with colleagues from more than 25 nationalities.

Hiring process

  • Submit a CV with current degree grades and a covering letter explaining motivation, skills, and experience.
  • Interviews will be held in Cambridge or virtually if required.
  • Applicants must sign an agreement assigning intellectual property produced during the internship to hirify.global.
