Engineering Manager (AI)

Location: Hybrid role based in Palo Alto, California, with onsite work one day per week. Remote work is available from anywhere in the United States.

Annual base salary in the San Francisco Bay Area: $234,650–$259,350, excluding equity, benefits, and other compensation components.

What you will do

• Define the AI technical strategy and roadmap for customer experience across voice, email, chat, and SMS agents.
• Design reliable production agent architectures covering orchestration, tool use, guardrails, fallback handling, and real-time services.
• Write code, review pull requests, prototype agent capabilities, and debug production issues alongside the engineering team.
• Partner with Product, Operations, and CX to identify workflows for AI augmentation or replacement and deliver measurable outcomes.
• Establish agent performance metrics and drive observability, quality monitoring, drift detection, and continuous improvement using tools such as Langfuse.
• Lead, hire, mentor, and develop a small senior engineering team while setting technical direction and removing delivery blockers.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software engineering experience building and operating production systems, including at least 2 years leading or managing engineering teams.
• Experience developing and shipping LLM-powered, conversational AI, or agentic systems in real-world environments.
• Hands-on experience with LLM and agent development, including prompt engineering, RAG, tool usage, and orchestration frameworks.
• Strong systems design, technical leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and customer-facing product delivery experience.
• Experience hiring, mentoring, and managing engineers and building an accountable engineering culture.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with telephony, messaging APIs, or chat platforms at scale.
• Experience with AI/ML evaluation and observability, including quality instrumentation, drift detection, and continuous improvement.
• Experience making build-versus-buy decisions and evaluating third-party vendors and platforms.
