Principal Software Engineer - Service Networking

Location: United States; roles based at the San Mateo, CA headquarters are onsite Tuesday through Thursday, with optional presence Monday and Friday

Salary: $295,250–$345,040 USD base pay, with potential equity compensation and benefits

What you will do

• Set the technical strategy and roadmap for the service-mesh platform.
• Design and build control-plane and data-plane capabilities for service discovery, routing, load balancing, and traffic policies.
• Lead integration and migration across Kubernetes, Nomad, and cloud environments.
• Partner with Security and application teams on workload identity, mutual TLS, and production traffic-policy enforcement.
• Improve resource efficiency and operational reliability through performance analysis, testing, observability, incident response, and deployment automation.
• Lead cross-team technical decisions, write and review production code, and mentor senior engineers.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems.
• Expertise in service mesh, proxies, application gateways, or a related infrastructure domain.
• Strong knowledge of networking fundamentals, service discovery, traffic management, failure isolation, and secure service communication.
• Strong programming skills in Go, C++, Rust, or another systems language.
• Production experience with Kubernetes or comparable orchestration platforms and infrastructure migrations.
• For US-based roles, certain US visa categories may not be supported, including potential future H-1B sponsorship.

Nice to have

• Experience with Envoy and Istio internals, xDS, workload identity, and substantive open-source contributions.
