Sustaining Engineer, Body & Closure Systems (Autonomous Vehicles)

Location: Foster City, California, United States; on-site

Base salary: $153,000–$184,000 per year, excluding equity, bonuses, and benefits.

Zoox is developing a purpose-built autonomous robotaxi and operates a fleet requiring long-term reliability, safety, serviceability, and availability.

What you will do

• Own sustaining engineering and corrective actions for body and closure systems across the in-service fleet and current production vehicles.
• Investigate and resolve field and manufacturing issues involving doors, latches, actuators, sealing, access panels, glazing, and body structures.
• Use fleet and production data, including MTBF, repeat failure rates, and downtime drivers, to prioritize work and validate solutions.
• Lead design updates and system improvements focused on reliability, durability, efficiency, serviceability, and manufacturing performance.
• Manage Engineering Change Requests and Change Actions and develop validation plans at component, system, and vehicle levels.
• Lead retrofit and rework campaigns and collaborate with suppliers to improve quality, reliability, and manufacturability.

Requirements

• BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• 8+ years of experience in powertrain, thermal, battery, or EV systems within product development, manufacturing, or sustaining engineering.
• Experience delivering subsystem-level corrective actions for production vehicles.
• Experience with root cause analysis, DFMEA, and product and process validation.
• Strong communication and documentation skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities cross-functionally.

Nice to have

• Experience with autonomous vehicles.
• Experience with Design for Manufacturing, Design for Service, Lean, Six Sigma, or similar improvement methodologies.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD tools, preferably CATIA, and familiarity with 3DX, DELMIA, SAP, JIRA, Confluence, dashboards, SQL, or Python.
