File Systems Engineer (Lustre)

Location: Hybrid, with an average of 2 days per week from an HPE office. The listed US salary range applies to Minnesota and New Jersey.

Salary: USD 106,000–243,000 annual base salary; actual offer may vary by geographic location, experience, education, and skills.

What you will do

• Design and implement enhancements for parallel file system subsystems, including Lustre and Linux kernel I/O stacks.
• Analyze and develop features such as layout evolution, Object Storage Target striping policies, and data tiering.
• Create and execute testing plans, protocols, and documentation for storage subsystems.
• Debug direct I/O call stacks, VFS bottlenecks, kernel panics, and distributed storage issues.
• Collaborate with software systems engineers and internal partners on reliable, high-performance storage for HPC and AI workloads.
• Provide technical guidance, code reviews, and mentoring to less-experienced engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or an equivalent field.
• Typically 4–7 years of professional experience.
• Strong systems programming skills in C, with experience in Python, Bash, or Rust.
• Architectural knowledge of the Lustre codebase and Linux internals, including page cache and memory management.
• Experience with high-performance computing clusters, enterprise storage networks, performance profiling, and tracing tools such as strace and perf.
• Mastery of English and the local language is required.
