Software Engineer, Staff: Applied AI, Science & Engineering (AI)

Location: New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA. Hybrid: staff are expected to work from one of the offices at least 25% of the time.

What you will do

• Build agent harnesses and research loops for literature review, hypothesis generation, simulation, analysis, and design iteration.
• Connect scientific computing and simulation tools, including finite element, CFD, electromagnetic, and molecular modeling software.
• Design evaluations that measure the correctness and limitations of Claude’s scientific and engineering work.
• Work directly with scientists and engineers at partner organizations to turn open-ended problems into verifiable tasks and ship pilots into their workflows.
• Convert successful partner solutions into reusable tools, components, and documented processes.
• Communicate technical results, limitations, and tradeoffs while partnering with research and product teams.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building software with strong engineering fundamentals across data pipelines, tooling, and interfaces.
• Experience building systems with large language models, including agents, tool use, or evaluations.
• Experience addressing technical problems in a science or engineering field such as physics, materials, chemistry, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering.
• Ability to work directly with expert users, understand their workflows, and define concrete, checkable systems.
• Strong judgment, high agency, clear communication, and comfort learning new domains.
• Minimum education: bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, or professional experience in a relevant field.

Nice to have

• Advanced degree or research experience in physical science or engineering.
• Experience with scientific computing, simulation, numerical methods, or optimization.
• Industrial R&D, national lab, deep-tech, forward-deployed AI, solutions engineering, ML research, RL environments, or evaluation design experience.
• Experience building software alongside customers or technical partners.
