Principal Data Scientist - Safety (Content Safety)

Location: United States; based at Roblox headquarters in San Mateo, California. Office-based roles require attendance Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday.

Salary: $274,000–$373,680 USD annual base pay.

What you will do

• Establish and monitor prevalence measurement methodologies for harmful content and violative behavior.
• Develop and validate ground-truth datasets aligned with platform safety policies.
• Analyze current and emerging safety threats and recommend investments in detection and moderation.
• Design and evaluate experiments for moderation and safety enforcement features.
• Apply causal inference to measure the effectiveness and systemic impact of safety initiatives.
• Partner with Product, Engineering, ML, Data Engineering, Policy, Compliance, and Legal teams to guide safety strategy.

Requirements

• 10+ years of industry experience in data science, economics, analytics, or machine learning engineering.
• 7+ years using Python or R and large-scale data tools including SQL, Hive, Spark, and Airflow.
• Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning.
• Experience developing large-scale safety or moderation systems for user-generated content platforms.
• Advanced degree or PhD in Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Applied Math, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
• Must have United States work authorization; certain U.S. visa categories may not be supported.
