TL;DR
Developmental Editor (Book Publishing): Performing substantive edits, managing authors, and supporting book acquisitions through manuscript development and production with an accent on editorial quality, theological accuracy, and publishing-market evaluation. Location: On-site at the corporate office in Lake Mary, Florida, USA. Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM.

Salary: $55,000–$60,000 per year, depending on skills and experience.

What you will do

  • Perform substantive edits covering content flow, syntax, structure, transitions, terminology, statistics, Scripture, and quoted material.
  • Manage assigned authors and supervise the writing process from contract through production.
  • Support book acquisitions by developing proposals, conceptual outlines, acquisition reports, and presentations.
  • Evaluate manuscripts and proposals for editorial quality, market potential, audience fit, and theological clarity.
  • Resolve content issues identified by copy editors and maintain communication with authors until manuscripts are sent to the printer.
  • Track schedules, submissions, pipeline titles, and multiple book projects while meeting deadlines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field, plus three years of book-editing experience.
  • Experience with book proposal evaluations and publishing contracts, with familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Strong understanding of manuscript organization, pacing, voice, argument structure, grammar, usage, and editorial style.
  • Knowledge of Christian and faith-based publishing, charismatic/Pentecostal markets, and Scripture-based theological accuracy.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback, evaluate authors and market opportunities, research comparable titles, and manage multiple projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, including Track Changes and Comments, Excel, and standard PC and internet applications; typing speed of at least 50 words per minute.

Nice to have

  • Basic understanding of profit-and-loss projections and publishing contract terms.
  • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Mac operations.
