2026/2027 PhD Residency - AI for Science, Early Stage Project (AI)

Salary: $109,000–$157,000 base salary per year, plus benefits

What you will do

• Architect multi-agent systems and autonomous AI workflows to automate complex research and accelerate discovery.
• Fine-tune and adapt large language models to parse unstructured data and identify latent technological trends.
• Build data pipelines and integrate heterogeneous sources, including APIs, databases, and large datasets.
• Apply time-series, sequential, or panel-data models to support event prediction and research analysis.
• Evaluate statistical and machine-learning models using temporal train/test splits, calibration, leakage prevention, and backtesting.
• Work with project members on a confidential or public X moonshot project.

Requirements

• Active enrollment in an academic program and progress toward completing a PhD.
• Experience building and deploying autonomous AI systems or agentic workflows.
• Hands-on expertise in LLM evaluation and adaptation, advanced prompting, and large-scale data processing.
• Strong Python skills and experience with heterogeneous datasets, APIs, databases, and data pipelines.
• Knowledge of statistical learning, rigorous out-of-sample evaluation, data integration, entity resolution, and data provenance.
• Ability to work at X's headquarters in Mountain View, California.

Nice to have

• Experience with network science, graph analytics, knowledge graphs, causal inference, econometrics, Bayesian modeling, or uncertainty quantification.
• Background in cross-disciplinary sciences, economics, complex systems modeling, or a quantitative/computational field.
• Experience evaluating scientific papers, reproducibility, benchmarking, or automated verification of research claims.
• Passion for deep tech, R&D lifecycles, and technology commercialization.
• Professional experience outside academia.
