Backend Engineer (Java)

Location: Hybrid role based at the Cambridge or Concord office in Massachusetts, United States

Salary: $110,000–$125,000 USD per year, excluding annual bonus and recurring RSU grants

What you will do

• Design, build, deploy, and support backend features from scoping through production.
• Contribute to technical design reviews, architecture discussions, code reviews, and sprint ceremonies.
• Collaborate with product managers, commercial partners, engineers, data scientists, and business intelligence teams.
• Monitor system health, investigate production issues, and participate in on-call rotations.
• Improve system performance, reduce complexity, and address technical debt in aging codebases.
• Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly and grow through mentorship, pairing, and feedback.

Requirements

• Experience designing, building, and operating backend systems through professional work, internships, or substantial personal or academic projects.
• Working proficiency in Java or a comparable backend language.
• Foundational understanding of system design and debugging in distributed or multi-service environments.
• Collaborative communication, reliable follow-through, early risk identification, and willingness to ask questions.
• Professional proficiency in written and spoken English.
• Curiosity and willingness to learn new tools, systems, and approaches; no specific degree is required.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with ad tech, bidding logic, or monetization infrastructure.
• Experience with server-to-server integrations or event-driven architectures.
• Experience with agile, sprint-based delivery.
• Exposure to observability tools, metrics, or production debugging workflows.
