TL;DR
Space Systems Engineer, Flight Safety (Aerospace): Developing flight safety analyses, regulatory compliance strategies, and safety-critical verification artifacts for launch and reentry missions with an accent on trajectory modeling, debris containment, and FAA Part 450 authorization. Focus on conducting FHA/FMEA and fault tree analyses, establishing real-time mission rules, and supporting live recovery operations and regulatory licensing.

Location: On-site in El Segundo, California, United States. Applicants must be U.S. persons authorized to access export-controlled technology.

Salary: $105,000–$139,466 per year for Engineer I; $119,543–$152,749 per year for Engineer II.

What you will do

  • Perform mission flight safety analyses, including failure-mode trajectory modeling and debris-field containment.
  • Develop technical regulatory strategies, Methods of Compliance, and safety cases for FAA launch and reentry authorizations.
  • Complete vehicle-level functional hazard analyses and failure mode and effects analyses.
  • Serve as the Flight Safety responsible engineer during mission rehearsals and live recovery operations.
  • Establish technical safety limits and mission rules for real-time on-console operations.
  • Prepare vehicle-level deliverables for regulatory organizations supporting reentry licenses and authorizations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, systems engineering, or a related field.
  • Ownership and execution of a complex engineering project from cradle to grave.
  • Strong risk-management experience with FMEA, FHA, and fault tree analysis.
  • Experience integrating interdisciplinary systems in the aerospace industry.
  • Excellent communication skills for influencing cross-functional teams and presenting to executives, customers, and regulators.
  • U.S. person status and authorization to work in the United States are required due to ITAR-controlled technology.

Nice to have

  • Experience with FAA Part 450, expected casualty modeling, trajectory dispersion, or debris analysis.
  • Safety-critical mission operations experience in aviation or space.
  • Experience with FCC Part 25 or Part 5 licensing for satellite and reentry communications.
  • Experience applying lean quality methods without compromising safety or reliability.
