Assistant Professor of Petroleum Engineering (Artificial Intelligence)

Location: Laredo, Texas, United States; regular attendance on campus and in the workplace is required.

What you will do

• Establish an independent, externally funded research program at the intersection of artificial intelligence and petroleum engineering.
• Design and teach AI-related petroleum engineering courses and teach additional petroleum engineering and engineering courses as needed.
• Contribute to the AI-themed MS in Systems Engineering.
• Mentor student research and senior design projects.
• Support recruitment, accreditation, curriculum development, and School service.
• Collaborate with academic, industry, and government partners on interdisciplinary research.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date; applicants nearing completion may be considered if the degree is awarded before appointment.
• Expertise at the intersection of artificial intelligence and petroleum engineering through research, scholarship, professional experience, or a combination thereof.
• Ability to design and teach AI-related petroleum engineering coursework and mentor student research.
• Ability to establish an independent research program and pursue external funding.
• Regular face-to-face attendance on campus and in the workplace is required.

Nice to have

• Experience or demonstrated ability to pursue externally funded research.
• Experience collaborating with industry.
• Expertise in physics-informed AI, hybrid modeling, digital twins, generative AI, reservoir optimization, drilling optimization, production optimization, or intelligent and autonomous systems.
