Assistant Professor in Earth Sciences - Geophysics

Location: Bozeman campus, United States; onsite nine-month academic-year appointment. Occasional travel for field research, professional meetings, and collaboration is expected. Field-based research and teaching may require outdoor work in variable mountain weather and occasional physically demanding activity.

What you will do

• Teach three courses per academic year across introductory, upper-division, and graduate geophysics and Earth Sciences subjects.
• Develop and revise curricula incorporating geophysical methods, computational data analysis, and advanced computational approaches.
• Build and maintain an independent, externally funded geophysics research program and publish peer-reviewed research.
• Advise undergraduate students and recruit, supervise, and mentor M.S. and Ph.D. students.
• Collaborate with departmental, university, state, national, and international partners on topics including tectonics, seismicity, volcanology, energy resources, and critical minerals.
• Participate in departmental, college, university, and professional service.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Geophysics, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field by the start date.
• Demonstrated potential to teach lower-division, upper-division, and graduate courses, including large introductory courses.
• Research experience in geophysics or a closely related field, supported by peer-reviewed publications appropriate to career stage.
• Potential to develop a competitive, externally funded research program.
• Potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate student mentoring.
• Ability to work based at the Bozeman campus and participate in field-based activities and occasional travel.

Nice to have

• Experience teaching large lower-division classes or using computational methods and emerging learning platforms.
• Integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, inversion, signal processing, or related computational techniques into geophysical research.
• Research complementing departmental strengths in tectonics, seismicity, volcanology, near-surface or exploration geophysics, energy resources, or critical minerals.
• Research and teaching agendas addressing regional or state-relevant Earth-system problems.
