TL;DR
Principal NPI Supplier Engineer (Plastics) (medical devices and supplier engineering): Leading supplier validation, tooling deployment, component qualification, and manufacturing readiness for next-generation medical devices with an accent on plastics, DFM/DFA, and pilot manufacturing. Focus on designing and qualifying tooling, mitigating manufacturability risks, planning capacity and CAPEX, and coordinating complex NPI programs across R&D, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and suppliers.

Location: Hybrid in Acton, Massachusetts, with on-site work at an hirify.global office at least 4 days per week. Travel up to 40% maximum, typically 15–25%, including domestic and international travel.

Salary: $143,300–$215,000 annual base salary for U.S.-based positions, plus potential incentive compensation.

What you will do

  • Manage NPI components, tooling, capital equipment, and part design across supplier development engineering projects.
  • Lead supplier validation, component qualification, tooling deployment, and process capability assessments.
  • Partner with R&D, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and NPD teams on pilot manufacturing, design validation, manufacturability, and prototype sourcing.
  • Lead DFM/DFA initiatives, supplier design reviews, tooling programs, and technical capability assessments.
  • Plan capacity, scalability, and CAPEX investments while optimizing tooling economics for plastic components.
  • Identify manufacturability risks, define testing strategies, troubleshoot component and process issues, and lead root cause analysis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably Plastics, Mechanical, or Molding Engineering; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • At least 12 years of relevant experience in the plastics industry and experience leading supplier engineering efforts for complex NPI projects in regulated environments.
  • Expertise in supplier process development, component validation, tooling qualification, DFM, and 3D design systems.
  • Experience with project management, technical capability assessments, tooling programs, component and process troubleshooting, and root cause analysis.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, leadership, and cross-functional influencing skills.
  • Ability to work in a Class 8 cleanroom environment as needed and travel domestically and internationally.

  • Understanding of GD&T.
  • Understanding of ASTM specifications for plastics and metals.
