Director of Technology & Chief Architect (Java)

Location: Remote, based in the United States; department location is Mahwah, New Jersey

Base salary: negotiable, paid annually based on experience and skills.

What you will do

• Own the architecture of a cloud platform comprising hundreds of Java microservices and millions of daily real-time transactions.
• Design service boundaries, APIs, data ownership, distributed transactions, consistency, idempotency, retries, and failure recovery.
• Set Java, database, cloud, observability, reliability, security, and auditability standards.
• Guide Kubernetes, containers, managed data services, networking, infrastructure as code, disaster recovery, and cloud cost efficiency.
• Lead architecture reviews, reduce architectural debt, and evolve legacy services without disrupting production traffic.
• Build and mentor engineering and technology teams, manage vendors, and communicate roadmaps, risks, and trade-offs to executives, partners, and regulators.

Requirements

• Must be eligible to work in the United States.
• 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years designing large distributed systems as an architect.
• Expert Java experience, including Java 17+, Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, concurrency, JVM performance tuning, and garbage collection.
• Production experience operating 100+ microservices and systems processing millions of real-time transactions per day.
• Deep database experience across relational databases, NoSQL, caching, replication, sharding, and streaming platforms.
• Experience with Kafka or comparable streaming technology, AWS or GCP, Docker, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, API design, observability, SLOs, and incident management.

Nice to have

• Gaming, iGaming, sweepstakes, social casino, sports betting, fintech, or payments experience.
• Experience with wallet, ledger, or payment systems requiring transaction reconciliation.
• Knowledge of gaming regulation, PCI DSS, or SOC 2 compliance.
• Experience migrating monoliths or legacy services to microservices without downtime, reactive Java, or large-scale FinOps.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
