Software Engineer, Sandboxing (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY; hybrid policy requires staff to be in an office at least 25% of the time.

Annual salary: $320,000–$485,000 USD

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate sandboxing infrastructure for untrusted, model-generated code and AI agent workloads.
• Improve startup time, density, throughput, snapshot and restore workflows, checkpointing, and warm pools.
• Strengthen compute, filesystem, and network isolation, including egress controls and per-session credential handling.
• Investigate kernel-, hypervisor-, and container-runtime-level performance, reliability, and security issues.
• Build monitoring, tracing, and debugging tools for sandbox latency and resource usage.
• Collaborate with research, product, platform, security, and cloud-provider teams on safe, scalable execution environments.

Requirements

• Experience with Linux systems programming, kernel development, or another low-level engineering area.
• Strong programming skills in Rust, C, C++, or Go.
• Working knowledge of virtualization or container isolation technologies such as KVM, QEMU, Firecracker, gVisor, or runc.
• Understanding of Linux namespaces, cgroups, scheduling, and memory management.
• Experience profiling and debugging system-level performance issues and shipping measurable improvements.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, or professional experience in a relevant field.

Nice to have

• Experience with multi-tenant sandboxes, serverless platforms, code execution systems, microVMs, or lightweight virtualization.
• Experience with OS security hardening, seccomp, LSMs, threat modeling, eBPF, and kernel tracing.
• Experience with Kubernetes, AWS, GCP, network isolation, egress proxies, GPU virtualization, or machine learning workloads.
• Experience supporting AI agents, computer-use systems, or reinforcement learning environments.
• Prior experience as a technical lead or mentor.
