Software Engineer, Machine Learning Systems

Location: In person at 1600 Bridge Parkway, Redwood Shores, California, United States

Salary: $120,000–$200,000 base salary per year, depending on experience and scope.

Develops and operates smart weather balloons and an AI weather model that produces global forecasts every hour from atmospheric observations.

What you will do

• Build tooling that runs weather models, detects failures, recovers from infrastructure outages, and keeps forecasts running.
• Develop real-time pipelines for incoming atmospheric observations, including handling late or missing data.
• Create tools that visualize data processing and model inference progress, bottlenecks, and failures.
• Own production systems after launch, including their performance, monitoring, reliability, and recovery behavior.
• Work with deep learning, backend, and frontend engineers to identify needs, build infrastructure, and guide future improvements.

Requirements

• Experience owning production software and investigating failures across multiple system components.
• Ability to explain difficult technical decisions, read unfamiliar code, debug complex issues, and build substantial software.
• Strong curiosity, independent problem-solving skills, and a willingness to learn model code and unfamiliar systems.
• Ability to use AI and agentic tools effectively while understanding, testing, and debugging shipped code.
• Prior machine learning experience is not required. Programming languages, frameworks, and years of experience are flexible.
• In-person availability in Redwood Shores, California is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with data pipelines, distributed systems, or infrastructure.
• Experience with scientific computing, weather data, or geospatial systems.
• Familiarity with machine learning inference, GPU computing, or PyTorch.
• Good UI design skills or a portfolio demonstrating built software.
