Software Engineer Machine Learning

Location: San Francisco, CA; New York, NY; or remote within the United States. In-person onboarding is required if hired.

Annual base salary: $153,000–$376,000 USD.

What you will do

• Design, build, and productionize ML models for search, discovery, ranking, retrieval-augmented generation, and generative AI features.
• Build scalable data and annotation pipelines for training and evaluation datasets, including human-in-the-loop workflows.
• Collaborate with AI researchers to improve datasets, evaluation metrics, model architectures, quality, and relevance.
• Partner with product engineers to deliver AI features across the platform.
• Develop and optimize systems for model training, inference, monitoring, and deployment.
• Explore new technical approaches and contribute to Figma’s long-term AI vision.

Requirements

• 5+ years of industry software engineering experience, including 3+ years focused on applied machine learning or AI.
• End-to-end experience with ML model training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring.
• Proficiency in Python and familiarity with ML libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, Spark MLlib, or XGBoost.
• Experience building scalable data, annotation, and AI model evaluation systems.
• Experience mentoring or leading others and contributing to technical excellence.
• Ability to work from a US hub or remotely within the United States; in-person onboarding is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with search relevance, ranking, NLP, or RAG systems.
• Experience with AI infrastructure and MLOps, including observability, CI/CD, and ML workflow automation.
• Experience developing creative or design-focused ML applications.
• Knowledge of C++ or Go.
• Product mindset and strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills.
