Software Engineering Lead (AgTech)

Location: Hybrid in Raleigh, North Carolina; practical commuting distance required, with onsite work typically 1–3 days per week. Travel is approximately 10%. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.

Salary: $115,000–$130,000 annually plus equity.

What you will do

• Take primary engineering ownership of the Mobile GroundOwl application, including issue diagnosis, enhancements, dependency management, releases, APIs, and integrations.
• Improve mobile reliability through automated testing, observability, documentation, and support tooling for offline field operation, synchronization, data integrity, and recovery.
• Design and develop laboratory automation integrating application software, firmware, sensors, motors, actuators, microcontrollers, single-board computers, and custom electronics.
• Build control logic, data-acquisition software, calibration routines, diagnostics, safety interlocks, and operator interfaces.
• Contribute across customer applications, backend services, device software, integrations, and internal engineering tools while collaborating with product, laboratory, hardware, and operations teams.
• Apply code review, testing, observability, security, documentation, and AI-assisted development practices across prototype and production systems.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 2 years of professional software engineering experience or equivalent experience through internships, co-ops, research, or substantial shipped projects.
• Experience maintaining or shipping a production mobile application; React Native and TypeScript/JavaScript experience is strongly preferred.
• Strong Python development skills and comfort with C/C++ or another language used for embedded, automation, or systems development.
• Hands-on experience with sensors, motors, motor drivers, actuators, microcontrollers, data acquisition, electronics troubleshooting, and rapid hardware prototyping.
• Must be eligible to work in the United States; visa sponsorship or transfer is not available.

Nice to have

• Fast-paced startup experience and mobile release management for the Apple App Store and Google Play.
• Experience with Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi, USB, serial, CAN, I2C, SPI, Linux edge computing, real-time systems, or embedded firmware.
• Background in laboratory instrumentation, robotics, industrial controls, motion control, machine vision, cloud APIs, backend services, databases, or telemetry systems.
• Experience with schematics, custom electronics and PCBs, KiCad or Altium, mechanical prototyping, CAD, 3D printing, or test fixtures.
• Experience with agriculture, field-deployed technology, or other software used outside traditional office environments.
